Setting up Gobby

December 12th, 2008

Mudlet is using Gobby, a collaborative text editor for editing the documentation and asciidoc for the markup.

Gobby was preferred over other collaborative text editors such as Adobe Buzzword or Google Docs because of it’s real-time ability - you see what changes other people are doing instantly as they’re typing. This pretty much eliminiates the chances of conflicts. Buzzword and Docs on the other hand take their time to update the document and such have a greater chance of generating a conflict.

asciidoc provides an easy way to format a document through it’s light and easy to learn markup language. See the asciidoc cheatsheet for an example.

Installing Gobby

Ubuntu

Click here to install gobby. That’s it!

Debian

Install the gobby package from the Synaptic Package Manager, or with sudo apt-get install gobby in the terminal.

OpenSUSE

Click here to install gobby. That’s it!

Fedora

Install the gobby package from the package manager, or with yum install gobby in the terminal.

Windows

Mac

You can install Gobby via Macports. Run sudo port selfupdate, and then sudo port install gobby.

Connecting with Gobby

To connect with Gobby, go to Gobby→Join Session. For host, type in mudlet.org. Pick yourself a name, and a light color (this is important - dark colors are hard on eyes), and click OK to connect.
